I still haven't found any other image editing tool that was as comprehensive as gimp in its toolkit.

"Clunky, unintuitive, bad ui blah blah"

I challenge anyone to name me another drawing tool or image editing tool that can chroma key out a single color on an image and edit an image's colormap fairly reliably. The only other tool that can do the latter afaik are piskel and aseprite which have a palette editor.

Gimp can do both of these things via 'color to alpha' and 'indexed mode' respectively and I'm struggling to think of any other software that can do either one or the other, let alone both. I checked some info on photoshop and I don't think it can do those things either.

Not trying to say gimp is the best thing ever, but it just works if you know what youre doing.

gimp regularly saves my life. i love gimp. i mean it sure as hell isn't my main art software but it's really incredibly useful as a tool when i need to mess with images

paint.net with plugins solos any photo editing software (TRUE!)
The second feature is missing from the plugin list completely and the feature most similar to "color to alpha" sounds destructive, apparently "Switch Gray to Alpha" deteriorates the image in a similar way that can be done by picking a color with the color select tool and then hitting the delete key, you'll get no transition from alpha to color and you'll probably delete the finer details along with the background. On top of that it only works on 1 singular color. If you wanna isolate the lineart you can just crank the contrast up to 100%. Most of the other effects are either already in gimp or easy to mimic like the outline tool isn't necessary when I can just select my image and then go into select > border and edit > fill with foreground color on the hamburger menu. It's a pointless plugin.

Sorry, but that won't cut it.

gimp is great but i mostly just use it for image conversion/exporting from various esoteric formats.
it still supports a lot of formats which died off by the turn of the century so it's useful for looking at things like asset backups from old 90s video games, it's become my swiss army knife for that stuff lol

i used to be a GIMP user, mainly with RAWTherapee to process the RAWs from my camera. it was good enough tbh, nothing to write home about but it got the job done. switched to affinity photo after my uni gave it to us for free

If there was any software that could render vector graphics as actual raster pixels within the DPI instead of infinite scaling, i'd be happy.

I am way too used to my Photoshop cc 2019 to switch to gimp
Not hating on gimp, I just find it clunky cus I never used it much lol
