How do you make these kind of drum sounds [industrial-esque/trip hop]

Have always liked hearing these kind of drum sounds, but have never really understood how to make them or what kind of samples to use.
I associate them with darker, industrial tinged trip hop from the 90s to early 2000s, think Massive Attack's Mezzanine.
Is it just specific samples with filtering and compression/distortion afterwards? if so what samples do i use for the beginning sound?

i think a lot of that is just phasers, with the occasional reversed sample in there. and picking the right drum samples. don't have specific samples to recommend, but it sounds more like recorded drums than synthesis-based drum machine to me, if that helps.
