do you guise like IRC? I think it'd be fun to start an IRC channel for the forum, but idk if IRC is trash or not lol. I never really got much of an oppurtunity to use IRC and I've always wanted to.

I personally love IRC; its a great way to communicate about various IT/tech related things, and many people still use it. I use it often to talk in IRC rooms about Void Linux, FOSS, etc. I would love to have one for this chat! Perhaps it would be a cool idea to bridge the built in chat feature on this forum over to a service like Matrix, or XMPP if not IRC?

I've heard about matrix but I've never tried that either! I think IRC might be a little old fashioned but maybe thats the fun of it lol

i've honestly never really used IRC before either. i briefly considered making a server for the fun of it but i never did. the chat plugin is good enough for me :)

that would require knowing how to write code and be a fancy programmer, which i am not :( it might be a fun project? though i wouldn't have any idea where to start.
what IRC channels do you hang out on? i'd love to lurk a few and see whats up

If ya started an irc that would be sikk as hell. Would be a fun project
Would ua run it from home?
most ISPs block port 6667, which i guess is the default port for IRC servers. most ISPs block a lot of useful ports, in the name of "safety". for example, here's all the shit that mine blocks:
  • TCP 21 (ftp)
  • TCP 25 (smtp)
  • TCP 80 (www)
  • TCP 110 (pop3)
  • TCP 6667 (ircd)
  • TCP/UDP 135-139 (dcom and netbios)
  • TCP/UDP 443 (ssl)
  • TCP/UDP 445 (ms-ds)
  • TCP/UDP 1433-1434 (ms-sql)

I personally hang out in channels relating to linux/foss stuff, any place I can learn new things or contribute to the conversation I suppose. the best way to find places to hang out is by getting into Liberachat/Freenode, sorting available channels by popularity/member count, and adding channels you're interested in as favs. Personally speaking though, as much as I love IRC, I find myself using Matrix the most. The convenience of it is really great, it supports images and whatnot, and has lots of channels that are similar in terms of topics that you'd find on LiberaChat for Freenode. If you havent fucked around with Matrix I highly, highly recommend it.

If you've never seen this diagram, you might find it interesting;

so basically everything is fucked except for XMPP, matrix and PGP email.

i just took a quick look at matrix, and it seems pretty neat. i'd have no idea how to bridge forum accounts and chat messages though. i plan on moving the site to a VPS (whenever the fuck buyvm has stock in luxembourg) instead of shared hosting (ew), so i might fuck around and set up matrix or an IRC server or whatever if yall are interested.

I'd love that. Another cool thing about Matrix is that they fully support bridging between other messaging platforms. So for example, if someone came to this site and wanted to get involved with chatting in a more convenient way than the forum chatting plugin, they could join the Matrix group. But let's say for a moment that said end user doesn't want to go through the hassle of making a Matrix account to join, they can use a Telegram bot that still allows them to interact with and chat with the users in the Matrix group.

I saw this working in action for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it blew me away with how much it has improved. During /r/place, I felt like helping the linux community with placetux. They had things set up so that discord users, telegram users, and matrix users were all able to chat pretty seamlessly. I asked them about it and they said it didn't take them too long to get things set up. Really, really cool stuff. XMPP is also great, but IMO isn't as convenient as Matrix (especially for group scenarios)

I support this idea! Maybe instead of setting up a server, we should create a channel in a exisiting one, like Rizon or EFnet.

here again on a whim to put in another for a matrix/irc/tele, shit would be hella nice. of course the chat we've got works alright too still

just bumping this to say i still love this idea
this would be awsome!

maybe i'll get impatient and just setup matrix on the dedi i have now instead of waiting for stock to be available at buyvm, who knows

just interjecting to say you dont *have* to self host matrix, you're more than fine to make a room on the typical matrix server until you get around to running your own instance. we could all hang there til the actual matrix room/space is made. i'd totally make it but im assuming you'd want to be the owner/admin of it so i haven't bothered

I was looking into setting up matrix server and it's pain in the ass + uses up a lot of resources, so I dropped the project, but fuck dude, if you were up for it, I'd be joining for sure.

just reiterating that a matrix server isn't needed and you could just make a matrix room on the matrix.org homeserver,

my avtism compels me to host my own server for everything I do, so that's not gonna fly.
Besides, my pals are fucking retarded and they would get banned in a week tops. It has happened before.

i made telegram chat

later this week maybe i'll actually try my hand at setting up synapse for people that don't want to use telegram.
