might be the cheapest soundcard with spdif ins/outs you can get period, especially for a mac

2 stereo analog outs, 1 stereo analog in, 1 headphones out, 1 mic/line in, 1 optical in/out and 1 coaxial in/out, drivers still work on w10 and EVEN MORE SURPRISINGLY OSX MOJAVE

old roland stuff is still good, if you're in the 300 bucks range a jv-1080 is still valid if not limited (though you could get lucky and find a pre-expanded one with the vintage synth card like i did) or if you can save just a bit more the fantom-xr is genuinely great if you can find one with the sampling tools expansion kit (most 2005+ units have it included from the factory, there's a sticker on the front so it's easy to tell)

but ill take note to stay away from post 1996 Rolland

any companies other than Roland I can look into? not that I dont like them id just like to have more choices

build quality has never recovered

post-1996 it's all downhill with a few good products (fantom-x/xr) or good ideas with terrible execution and even worse prices (v-synths)

yet i'd be lying if i said i didn't feel ever so slightly bad when bashing it

post-1996 roland is genuinely fucking terrible, it's glue-sniffing-retard levels of bad to the point where their midrange subsidiary (EDIROL) offered MUCH better products support and build quality-wise

thats the most im willing to spend, maybe on a keyboard or drum machine

I dont want to go to out for a first time purchase, 250 USD maybe 300 at most

glad I asked you about this because I was considering buying some hardware to make music with, and knowing that dog shit like that exists should keep me on the lookout

the only good thing about it is that it reads S-7xx series CDs natively via SCSI and it can be expanded with way more RAM than an S-7XX

it's too clunky to use from the front panel (same issue as the 2080 but amplified: big screen =/= a replacement for a good UI and UX), the COSM effects are neat but anyone who pretends to care about them is lying through their teeth, the analog outputs are terrible (as with any roland synth with both digital and analog outs), the JV and JD waveforms have been further compressed so they sound worse than the original hardware (issue that plagues the 1080 VST too), the sampler interface is a joke (it could've and should've had a proper video out like the S series) and it's prone to a myriad of problems, from a faulty display to dead or (very, very common issue) noisy outputs or even MORE common a total power circuitry failure that might kill the entire unit out of the blue

twice what it should really cost

most go for 600€ unexpanded and without shipping

christ these prices are absurd

a fundamentally terrible roland rompler that got ciclejerked to stardom but only has one useful feature really
