it doesn't have a good screen and it's clunky to navigate, keybed could be better but it's good for a midrange synth, could use another flash board slot

i'd say the moxf is the best option out of all of them even if it's double your budget, it can load a ton of good libraries (but you need to find one with a 512/1024mb flash module included), has a good enough keybed, has usb audio so you don't need an interface, can act as an interface for other instruments and it's still a workstation (though a clunky one) if you don't want to use a pc (plus it has the biggest wave ROM out of the box)

tl;dr if you don't have a keyboard already an ES6 has an excellent keybed and it sounds really good, alternatively there's the triton extreme for around 500 but the triton vst is identical to the hardware and the keybed itself isn't worth 500 bucks, ideally a MOXF is the most capable one and its best libraries don't have a digital equivalent - midrange keybed but it gets the job done and has an usb-audio interface too - if you have a keyboard the fantom-xr is good and relatively cheap (and you can load S-7XX CDs on it after converting them but it's painfully slow) but the srx expansion boards are still somewhat expensive and they have (bad but still usable) VST versions too - the rack ES costs around the same, accepts two PLG cards (but none of them are really worth owning) but can't be expanded with ram so you can't load samples on it unlike the keyboard

there are the MU1000/2000EX too, same deals as the edirol ones but yamaha - probably won't work with modern hardware though

if you can get it for 150 bucks there's also the motif classic but don't get the rack version, it's terrible

  • Xeraser @ Xeraser:
yamaha has a few options if you get lucky, there's the motif stuff (mainly the ES6 for ~300 if you get lucky or the rack ES)) or if you can double your budget there's the MOXF (will serve you extremely well despite the cheap keybed and you can load all the libraries I uploaded)

there aren't many good recommendations on the korg side unless you can find a triton extreme for a very, very good price (300-500) but that's only if you don't have a good keyboard already, korg's vsts are genuinely indistinguishable from the hardware (aside from the M1 but only because the M1 had terrible outputs)

there's the edirol-sd80/sd-90, essentially a GM2 desktop module plus a mini xv-5080 with half the ROM and a few sounds from a few expansion cards. the sd-90 includes an audio interface that works wonderfully

old roland stuff is still good, if you're in the 300 bucks range a jv-1080 is still valid if not limited (though you could get lucky and find a pre-expanded one with the vintage synth card like i did) or if you can save just a bit more the fantom-xr is genuinely great if you can find one with the sampling tools expansion kit (most 2005+ units have it included from the factory, there's a sticker on the front so it's easy to tell)
