According to the guy I knew, the whole series started as an in joke between product testers. They were trying to outdo eah other coming up with the worst possible product names and nobody could top Thythm Wolf (I think it was that one, maybe it was Timre Wolf but I' pretty sure it wasn't a pun, jsut ripping on the trend for giving gear and bands animal names back then)

even if I sample stuff on the MPC and then move it over to a computer it still has that sound, so I think it's probably at least as much to do with them cutting corners in the analog signal path compared to the 3000

An old friend of mine was a product tester for Akai for the first half of the 2010s (the really bad, Rhythm Wolf years) and he heard that from one of the old engineers, but I have no real proof it's true.

I've used a few other late 90s/early 2000s Akai samplers that work at the same bit/sampling rate and they don't have the sound.

Apparently the MPC2000 sound is a bug in the OS that makes the filter stay slightly resonanyt even when the resonance is all the way down.

I'm not finding any sample packs either, but I bet you could get away with samples aimed at, like, EBM or synthwave or maybe even dubstep, so that could at least widen your search.

Nice. I've been using an Octatrack for a few years but I got an MPC2000xl for $100(!) quite a while ago from a producer who thought he had broken it trying to replace the data slider and didn't have time to get it fixed because he usually made 8 beats a day, so every day without an MPC he was losing potential income (plus it was in the early 2010s so an MPC2000xl was only worth about $400 to begin with) and that's still the brain fo my whole setup (but the Octatrack is the master clock because it really doesn't work well if it has to sync to something else)

The only reason people download them is that they spent all their money on the original disks and carts and now they can't afford to buy backup devices. It makes perfect sense.
