Medals are a premium currency, paid for with real money. All proceeds from Medals will go directly towards hosting the site and ensuring its existence far into the future. Other users cannot view the amount of Medals you possess. Medals are unable to be stolen by other users, obviously.
Some of the items sold for medals, are merely jokes. These items will be marked appropriately. Do not spend ANY money on these "meme" items expecting any potential changes or actions to last. This is a way to let people support the site, and have a little bit of fun while doing it. Don't expect that thread you deleted to actually stay deleted.
